Caravan Cover Terminology Glossary

Term Definition
300D / 600D ‘D’ stands for denier, a measure of fabric yarn thickness. Higher numbers indicate heavier, more durable fabric. 600D is heavy-duty; 300D is lighter and easier to handle.
Oxford Polyester A woven polyester fabric known for strength, durability and abrasion resistance. Used throughout Aussie Covers (600D marine grade) and Kaiser ranges (300D standard / 600D Durapoly).
Olefin HD ADCO’s proprietary roof fabric, developed for long-term outdoor storage in high-UV areas.
Polypropylene A lightweight, breathable synthetic fabric widely used in caravan covers, typically in bonded multi-layer (3-ply or 4-ply) construction.
Breathable A fabric’s ability to allow trapped moisture vapour to escape from beneath the cover, reducing condensation, mould and mildew.
Water resistant Repels water on impact (water ‘beads’ on the surface) while remaining breathable. Most quality caravan covers are water resistant rather than fully waterproof.
Waterproof Completely impervious to water. A fully waterproof, non-breathable cover can trap moisture beneath the fabric and is generally not recommended for long-term caravan storage.
UV stabilised Fabric treated to withstand degradation from ultraviolet radiation — important under the harsh Australian sun.
External body length The measurement along the base of the vehicle between its longest body points, excluding the drawbar and (where possible) front / rear accessories. The key measurement for cover sizing.
Internal cover dimensions The actual metric dimensions of a cover (length x width x height). These vary between brands by up to 14cm within the same advertised imperial size.
Roof overhang Additional cover fabric extending beyond the roofline. Occurs because covers taper from roof to base; increases when accessories are included in the covered length.
Elasticised hem An elastic bottom edge that draws the cover in under the base of the vehicle, assisting with a custom fit.
Securing straps Straps that pass underneath the vehicle from one side to the other and fasten with buckles, holding the cover in place. Aussie Covers include five, plus front and rear cinching straps.
Cinching straps Front and rear straps used to gather and secure any excess cover length, helping prevent flapping and billowing.
Drop (height) The side wall measurement from the roof-line down to the vehicle base, excluding ground clearance and roof-mounted accessories.
Hybrid caravan A crossover between a camper trailer and a caravan, typically with a narrower, lower body and a wind-up, pop-up or electrically operated roof.
Pop-top caravan A caravan with a lowering roof section, reducing overall height for storage and towing.
Class A motorhome A large, bus-style motorhome built on a dedicated chassis with a flat, vertical front.
Class B motorhome A van conversion (i.e. Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Fiat Ducato). No ready-made Australian covers currently exist for this type.
Class C motorhome A motorhome built on a truck or van cab-chassis, typically with an over-cab sleeping area.
ATL (Authority to Leave) Delivery instructions authorising a courier to leave a parcel without a signature, at the customer’s risk.
MMM principle ‘Manual Metric Measurement’ — Caravan Cover Shop’s rule that cover sizing must always be based on manually taken metric measurements, never advertised specifications.
