Caravan Cover Knowledge Base FAQ

General Questions

Do I really need a caravan cover?

A quality caravan cover helps protect your caravan from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, rain, dust, bird droppings, tree sap, leaves and other environmental contaminants during storage.

While every storage situation is different, many caravan owners choose to use a protective cover to help preserve the appearance and condition of their investment. This also helps maintain resale value if and when an owner ever wishes to advertise their caravan for sale.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

Which caravan cover is the best?

There is no single caravan cover that is the best choice for every customer. The most suitable cover depends on factors including vehicle type, storage environment, weather exposure, preferred fabric construction, ease of installation and budget. Caravan Cover Shop recommends products based on each customer’s individual requirements rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

See Chapter 6 — Fabric & Cover Comparison.

Why doesn’t Caravan Cover Shop simply recommend the most expensive cover?

A higher-priced cover is not always the most appropriate solution.

Recommendations are based on achieving the best balance between budget, protection, durability, practicality and value for the customer’s particular circumstances.

See Chapter 2 — Why Choose Caravan Cover Shop.

Measuring & Sizing

Can I use the caravan manufacturer’s advertised length?

No — we strongly advise against it.

Do not rely on advertised caravan lengths found online, in AI search results, in sales brochures or in Owner’s Manuals. Most manufacturers refer to ‘internal’ specifications when advertising their length dimension, and there is no standard way in which these dimensions are advertised. Caravan Cover Shop follows the ‘MMM’ principle — Manual Metric Measurement is KEY. Always measure your caravan manually, in metric, using a tape measure.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

Should I measure in feet and inches, or metres and centimetres?

Metric measurements are required because they provide greater accuracy and are easier to compare with manufacturer specifications.

Also, even though all cover brands advertise the same 2-foot incremental lengths (i.e. 18’-20’, 20’-22’ etc), there is a difference in metric length between brands of up to 14 centimetres. This amount of difference may mean one cover brand will fit, while another brand in the same advertised size might be overly tight, or not fit at all.

Should I include the drawbar?

No. Caravan cover sizes are best selected using the external body dimensions of the caravan body panelling rather than the overall towing length. This is because you will achieve a more secure overall fit to the body panelling than if you were to try and fit it to the overall travel length, where there is less chance of being able to properly secure it.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

Should I include my front storage box?

It depends on whether there is sufficient clearance behind the storage box (approximately 50mm) and whether you want it protected beneath the cover.

Both approaches are acceptable. Contact Caravan Cover Shop if unsure, or see Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

Should I include spare wheels or bike racks?

If there is sufficient clearance between the accessory and the caravan body, they can often remain outside the cover. Otherwise, they may be included within the overall measurement.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

How much extra length should I allow?

TIP: Always add an additional 150mm–200mm to your metric body length measurement when choosing a cover size to ensure the fit won’t be too tight. Doing this will also allow for an easier fitting / removal experience.

A cover that is too tight will make it difficult to use the side access panel zippers, which may then fail during installation.

Roof Accessories

Do I need a larger cover because I have an air conditioner?

In most cases, no. Modern caravan covers are designed to accommodate common roof-mounted accessories such as rooftop air conditioners without affecting the required cover size.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

What about solar panels?

Solar panels sit low on the roof and are unlikely to affect cover sizing.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Will antennas or roof vents be a problem?

Generally not. Most common roof-mounted accessories are accommodated by the flexibility of the cover fabric. Please ensure all aerials and protruding objects are fully retracted before fitting a cover.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Fitting

How do I fit my cover?

Generally, most caravan, hybrid, pop top, camper trailer and motorhome covers are fitted in much the same way, although there are some minor differences between brands. Ideally, two people should fit a caravan cover, and the cover should not be fitted to a wet caravan.

As a general guide: retract all aerials and protruding objects, lay the cover out beside the caravan, look for a logo to indicate direction, stretch the cover to its full length, unzip all available zips and lay the side panels over the top of the cover, then with one person at each end, carefully pull the cover over the caravan from one end to the other. Close all zippers, then pass the nylon straps under the caravan and fasten the buckles to hold the cover firmly in place — taking care NOT to over-tighten. A small step-ladder may also assist.

Fitting a cover can also be done by a single person — Caravan Cover Shop has a YouTube instructional video demonstrating how: How to Fit a Caravan Cover — VIDEO

Why is there extra fabric above my storage box?

When front storage boxes are included beneath the cover, the longer base length of the cover means there will be an extended roof panel. This is normal and simply reflects the additional length required. An additional securing strap may be required to secure the excess fabric if it is billowing excessively in windy conditions.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Is some movement in the wind normal?

Yes. Some movement is expected, and it is impossible to prevent movement in wind 100%.

The objective is to minimise unnecessary movement wherever possible by selecting the correct size and tensioning the cover correctly.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Should I add extra straps?

If the cover exhibits excessive movement during windy conditions, additional securing straps may improve tension and reduce billowing. Caravan Cover Shop can recommend an inexpensive option if necessary.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Can a caravan cover scratch my caravan?

When fitted correctly and kept clean, a quality caravan cover should help protect the caravan. Dirt trapped beneath the cover, loose straps or repeated rubbing against sharp edges may contribute to wear.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Materials

What is 600D Oxford Polyester?

600D Oxford Polyester is a heavy-duty woven fabric known for its durability and abrasion resistance. It is used throughout the entire cover on the Aussie Covers and Kaiser ‘Durapoly’ ranges.

See Chapter 6 — Fabric & Cover Comparison.

What is Olefin HD?

Olefin HD is ADCO’s proprietary roof fabric designed for long-term outdoor protection.

See Chapter 6 — Fabric & Cover Comparison.

Why is breathability important?

Breathable materials allow moisture vapour to escape, helping reduce condensation and the conditions that promote mould and mildew.

See Chapter 6 — Fabric & Cover Comparison.

Are caravan covers waterproof?

A common misconception is that caravan covers should be completely waterproof. In reality, most quality caravan covers are designed to be water resistant while remaining breathable. Breathable fabrics allow trapped moisture vapour to escape from beneath the cover, helping reduce condensation and the conditions that contribute to mould and mildew. A completely waterproof, non-breathable cover may trap moisture beneath the fabric. For long-term caravan storage, the most effective covers balance water resistance with breathability.

See Chapter 6 — Fabric & Cover Comparison.

Storage

Is a cover still worthwhile if my caravan is stored under a carport?

Many owners still choose to use a cover under partial shelter to protect against dust, bird droppings, tree sap and indirect UV exposure. The most appropriate cover depends on the storage environment.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

What if my caravan is stored beneath trees?

A cover can help reduce the impact of leaves, tree sap and bird droppings, although regular inspection is still recommended.

How can I stop water pooling?

Where practical, slightly raising or lowering the drawbar, or using a caravan leveller on one side may encourage rainwater to run off more effectively.

See Chapter 7 — Expert Advice.

Care & Maintenance

How do I clean my caravan cover?

Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Ensure the cover is clean and completely dry before storing it.

See Chapter 9 — Care & Maintenance.

Can I waterproof my cover?

Some covers may benefit from waterproofing as they age. Caravan Cover Shop supplies ‘Canvas Magic Waterproofer’ which is suitable for caravan covers. Always follow the product instructions on the bottle.

How can I remove mould?

Caravan Cover Shop supplies ‘Canvas Magic Mould Remover’ which is designed to assist in removing mould from suitable outdoor fabrics.

Always test products on a small, inconspicuous area first and follow the manufacturer’s directions on the bottle.

Orders, Payment & Support

I’m not sure which cover I need

No problem.

If you are unsure which cover is most appropriate, please provide the following metric measurements:

  • External body length (excluding front / rear accessories where possible)
  • External body width (excluding the side awning)
  • External body height (excluding roof-mounted accessories and excluding ground clearance)
  • Details of any front and rear accessories, including whether there is a gap between these and the body panelling
  • A few photographs, if you feel these will help to better illustrate your setup

These details allow your measurements to be compared with the dimensions of the available covers so the most suitable size can be recommended.

See Chapter 5 — Buying Guide.

Do you provide advice before I purchase?

Yes. Helping customers select the most appropriate cover is a core part of Caravan Cover Shop’s service.

Recommendations are based on your specific metric measurements, storage conditions, intended use and customer preferences. Even if a customer places an order without seeking advice first, Caravan Cover Shop makes contact with every customer prior to shipment to check dimensions and ensure the right fit.
