Why Choose 600D Oxford Polyester covers over Polypropylene?

What is the Difference between Polyester and Polypropylene?
Most better quality caravan covers are manufactured using fabrics such as 'Polypropylene' and 'Polyester'.
Some cover brands might use a mix of these fabrics, where Polyester is used in the roofing panel, and polypropylene is used in the wall and end panels.
Some cover brands use Polyester for ALL panels.
Let's look at the main differences, and the features and benefits of each fabric.
Oxford Polyester
What is it?
A woven polyester fabric with a polyurethane (PU) or PVC coating.
Being a woven fiber, Polyester is manufactured in a wide variety of 'Denier'. 'Denier' refers to the yarn 'thickness', i.e. higher denier = heavier, stronger threads.
Polyester fabric can be manufactured in a wide variety of denier, 300D and 600D being most commonly used for caravan covers.
It is possible to make covers from heavier grade 1200D, or even 2000D, however when the yarn thickness increases, the cover becomes considerably heavier.
Heavier fabric means higher manufacturing and freight costs, resulting in higher prices for retail consumers.
Think of 300D and 600D fabric as being the 'sweet spot' i.e. best fabric quality partnered with relatively low manufacturing and handling costs.
Benefits of Polyester:
- ✔️ High Strength & Tear Resistance
Much more durable against abrasion, sharp edges, and tearing compared to polypropylene. Can better handle flapping in the wind or branches rubbing against it. - ✔️ Superior Water Resistance
Typically coated or laminated for excellent water repellency. Won’t absorb water like some untreated fabrics. Resists mold and mildew better because it dries quickly. - ✔️ Better UV Protection
With quality coatings, blocks UV rays more effectively. Helps prevent your caravan paintwork and seals from sun damage. - ✔️ More Premium Look & Feel
Heavier weight gives a more fitted appearance. Less likely to sag over time, and less likely to billow and flap in windy conditions.
Considerations:
- ⚠️ Slightly heavier to handle (especially large covers).
- ⚠️ Usually more expensive.
Polypropylene
What is it?
A lightweight, non-woven material (like Tyvek) often used in budget covers.
Benefits:
- ✔️ Lightweight & Easy to Fit
Very manageable if you’re covering your caravan alone. Less bulk when folded up. - ✔️ Breathability
More naturally breathable, reducing condensation risk if not laminated. - ✔️ Cost-Effective
Usually the cheapest option, suitable for occasional use or mild climates.
Drawbacks:
- ⚠️ Lower abrasion resistance—tears much more easily from corners or wind movement.
- ⚠️ Lower UV resistance—sunlight breaks it down faster.
- ⚠️ Water resistance varies—may let water through if untreated or after prolonged exposure to the elements.
- ⚠️ Shorter lifespan—often only 1–2 seasons of regular use before it starts to degrade.
When to Choose 600D Oxford Polyester
- ✔️ You store the caravan outdoors all year.
- ✔️ Your local weather climate consists of strong sun / UV or heavy rain.
- ✔️ You want a cover that will stand the test of time.
- ✔️ You prefer a snug, fitted look and robust feel.
When to Choose Polypropylene
- ✔️ You only cover occasionally or seasonally.
- ✔️ Budget is more of a priority.
- ✔️ Your caravan is stored in a carport or shed (protected from UV).
- ✔️ You prefer a lighter cover to manage solo.
Quick Tip:
If your budget allows, 600D Oxford Polyester is usually worth the investment over time—especially in Australia’s harsh sun—because you are less likely to have to replace it as often, and it will likely end up keeping your caravan in better shape for longer.
